It's the most Provençal of the capitals and one of the richest in terms of history. The capital of Valais, with its 30,000 inhabitants, benefits from the proximity of the mountains, a mild climate, a medieval town center and the presence of four castles. Two large pedestrian zones, Place du Midi and Place des Remparts, give Sion a very special character. It's great fun to stroll along the cobbled streets on market days and to sit on one of the many sunny terraces. Sports enthusiasts and mountain lovers are well catered for, with nearby ski resorts and an extensive network of hiking trails.
