Avenches still has Roman remains that remind us that the village was the capital of Roman Helvetia. In the 2nd century, 20,000 people lived in the town. Its boundaries were much larger. It is enough to see how far some remains are from the centre. Today's Avenches is limited to the capitol of the ancient city. The amphitheatre, the theatre and the sanctuary of the Cigognier bear witness to the importance of the city before its fall caused by the barbarian invasions (3rd century). Beautiful medieval stones add character to the town, as does its 16th century Renaissance castle. Avenches is famous for its festivals in the arenas at the end of the summer.
