Petit Futé's opinion on MARKET STAIRS

Plate millesim 2022

An urban comedy we love. Up, down, up and even down these steps! Just like old times...

These beautiful wooden staircases (177 steps) starting from the Place de la Palud (at the bottom of the rue Mercerie) were a covered passage linking the upper town to the lower town. Their existence dates back to the 13th century, but they were built in their present form between 1717 and 1719. Everything was designed so that two people could cross it, loaded with baskets, to reach the two markets: the one at La Palud and the one that stood in the small square halfway up the stairs. At the same time, a pretty cobbled street lined the stairs.
