Until the 13th century, Morges was a small village. In 1286, Count Louis de Savoie had a castle built to prevent the Bishop of Lausanne from extending his territories, and the town grew. The port quickly grew in importance, and only in the 19th century did it face competition from the port of Ouchy in Lausanne. Morges has retained much of its medieval character. In addition to this historical aspect, in May-June Morges hosts a popular comedy festival, Morges-sous-Rire, and in April-May, a Tulip Festival that transforms the town into a city of flowers.
