This town, founded at the end of the 13th century, was home to Necker, a Genevan and French politician who served as director of finance under Louis XVI. His wife was the hostess of a famous Parisian salon and benefactress of the hospital that still bears her name. As for their daughter, the future Mme de Staël, she opposed Napoleon and hosted one of the first Romantic salons in Coppet, welcoming Schiller, Goethe and Benjamin Constant. Coppet, interesting for its past, boasts attractive houses, a Gothic Dominican church and a pretty little château. Just outside the village, head for the Rocailles beach, which also boasts a sailing school!
