Petit Futé's opinion on CERN (CENTRE EUROPÉEN POUR LA RECHERCHE NUCLÉAIRE) (EUROPEAN CENTER FOR THE NUCLEAR RESEARCH)

Vintage plate 2020

A world-famous science centre that tells you the secrets of its activities. Everyone asks themselves one day: how did the world begin? CERN, founded in 1954, now has 20 Member States working on this research. It is one of the largest scientific laboratories in the world. The special tools used are particle accelerators and detectors. These include the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the most powerful accelerator ever built. Representing a circle 27 kilometres long straddling the French-Swiss border, you will not be able to see it because it is located 100 metres underground. It is a unique tool for scientists from more than 100 countries. The LHC will revolutionize our understanding of the world, from the infinitely small, inside atoms, to the infinitely large of the Universe.

Discover the fascinating world of the infinitely small and the infinitely large by exploring the spectacular new permanent exhibition "Universe of Particles" located in the Globe of Science and Innovation. Take advantage of your visit to also discover Microcosm, CERN's interactive museum very close to the reception. Completely revamped, the museum immerses you in simulations of particle collisions in order to understand the purpose and functioning of the LHC. Interactive screens and experiments will transport you into the skin of a physicist and the passion of an explorer.
