The town of St. Gallen, nestled between the hills of Appenzell and Lake Constance, with its UNESCO World Heritage-listed former convent district, has both personality and charm, with that little something extra that really makes your stay enjoyable. The magic is in the old stonework and the hundreds of oriels or corbels - the strange windows that once enlarged a house and testified to the wealth of its owners. Switzerland's eighth-largest city behind Lucerne, St. Gallen is always lively, with its 80,000 inhabitants, including almost 8,500 students, and its Wednesday and Saturday markets.
