Cross-country skiing in winter, hiking in summer, and always the same magnificent mountain scenery: Andermatt, 1,440 m above sea level, on the edge of the Unteralp Reuss, is the largest of the three villages in the Ursern Valley. At the crossroads of north-south and west-east routes, it is a small, unspoilt mountain town that was already appreciated by Goethe: "Of all the regions I know, this is the most interesting and the one I prefer." Tourism is booming in this resort, which is less well known than its Graubünden neighbors. This is because the Ursen Valley, at the foot of the Gotthard Pass, is one of Switzerland's most impressive high valleys.
