Solothurn, located at the southern foot of the Jura mountains on the banks of the River Aare, some 30 km from Biel, is known as Switzerland's most beautiful Baroque city. From the 16th to the 18th century, this Catholic town was the residence of the plenipotentiaries of the kings of France. The city's jewel, St. Urs Cathedral, whose façade was financed by Louis XIV, is a must-see. The interior is adorned with refined Baroque stucco. Solothurn, with just over 16,600 inhabitants, is also known for harmonizing Italian grandeur, French charm and Swiss-German bonhomie in one place.
