Tourism in pioneering Gstaad began in 1920. The resort boasts one of the largest ski areas in Europe, stretching across the entire region and including the slopes of Saanen, Gstaad (Eggli, Wispile, Wasserngrat), Schönried, Saanenmöser, Zweisimmen, St Stephan, Rougemont and Château-d'Œx, as well as those of Glacier 3000. The resort has always attracted the international gotha, who appreciate its exclusivity and discretion. Celebrities who have stayed here or own a chalet include Louis Armstrong, Liz Taylor, John Travolta, Johnny Hallyday and Roger Federer. Gstaad has the good taste to remain a chic old mountain village, where turn-of-the-century chalets display their elaborate carvings, palaces have been discreetly modernized and life seems easy and carefree for those who stay here. Gstaad is a fine example of Swiss quality of life. The very short "Promenade" main street, lined with luxury boutiques, is exclusively pedestrianized.
