The town of Tahoua was born on the location of an old Azna village. The city grew from the th century, benefiting from the different waves of immigration from the north and south-east. It is a small town with densely populated surrounding villages. Tahoua spreads its old houses hausa coloured color around the market and runs on a small hill where the administrative district is located in the sub-prefecture. The Sunday market attracts nomads and farmers in small shops under the arcades: picturesque place where cultures meet, languages (hausa, peul and tamashek) in a fouillis of colors. In particular, there is the soap sabouni soli made with the bark of a current tree, balanitis. Traditionally, neighbourhoods were organized by profession as in birni or cités cited: that of blacksmiths, furs-factories, stylists and potters; today, a large rural population of sedentary and nomadic origin is getting mixed up with urban dwellers.
