Located 126 km south of Baku, Salyan is in some way the crossroads city between the centre and the south of the country: roads and railways actually pass through this communication node before they continue their journey in one direction or another. The city developed on the site of a former caravanserai, originally founded by the Sal tribe, hence its name.
