A stage on the Silk Road in the Middle Ages, Shamakhi welcomed caravans from India and the East, loaded with silk on their way to Europe. In the 16th century, the town reached its peak. The traditional trade routes, which passed further north, were subject to heavy taxes, prompting merchants to divert their routes to the south, and thus to Sheki and Shamakhi. At that time, the town had five very active market places and about ten caravanserais. Today, Shamakhi is famous for its handicrafts, especially carpets, for its vineyards and for having given birth to many Azeri artists and intellectuals.
