Chakhimardan, a major pilgrimage site where tens of thousands of Muslims used to go every year to the supposed tomb of Ali, has suffered enormously from the closure of the borders. If you manage to get through (check the number of entries in your visa!), you will not be disappointed: the enclave nestles in the heart of the mountains, in a quiet and green landscape, and it is easy to understand why this little corner of paradise has been chosen for prayer and meditation. It is here that one of the fiercest resistances to the Bolsheviks took place. The basmatchi held the mausoleum as a stronghold for a long time before being defeated by the troops of the new regime.
