Namangan is said to derive its name from the Tajik word namak, meaning "salt", and kop, meaning "mine". Located a little less than 90 km north of Ferghana, Namangan is one of the ancient stopover towns on the Silk Road. Archaeological excavations around the mausoleum of Khodja Amin Kabri have shown that in the 10th century the city was already a rather developed center of crafts and trade. Namangan has remained very traditional and religious, and little visited by tourists. Its official center is the green Babur Park, but its real heart is around the Chorsu bazaar, where the Mullah Kirghiz madrasa and the Khodja Amin Kabri mausoleum are located.
