Bukhara in the heart of the red desert, Bukhara is the pearl of Kyzyl Kum. The sedentary life appeared there early, before the conquest of Alexander the Great, thanks to intensive irrigation and the Zeravshan River, which dumped large reserves of water there. Unlike other cities located on the Silk Route, Bukhara has managed to keep authenticity happily messy. Around the Liab-i-Khaouz, in the streets of the Jewish quarter or under the domes of the bazaars, we feel caught in an atmosphere of another world. The shops are reminiscent of Moroccan the, the dollars are just as popular and the tourists expected on foot, but the quality of the architecture, the richness of the ornaments, the density of colours take over.We listen, we look, we forget the time. It goes back to the heart of this city forbidden to infidels for centuries. It was the time of the great travellers, where Bukhara, radiant, was nicknamed the «Pearl of Islam». Before being destroyed by the hordes of Khan khan, rebuilt, then again razed by Timur. Bukhara has constantly lost its prestige and commercial importance over the centuries, before returning to the front of the stage in the «great game» at the end of the th century. Today is one of the most glamorous steps in Central Asia. Its city centre remains alive and not reserved for tourism. In contrast to Samarkand La, Bukhara features architecture styles spanning ten centuries. In addition, in its historic centre, Bukhara has more than 300 000 inhabitants, making it the fourth largest building in the country. A large proportion of the local population belonged to the Tajik ethnic population, while the Bukhara Jews were fewer and fewer, but were an active and important community until independence.
