In the south of the archipelago, Orango Island is part of the 160,000-hectare national park of the same name, comprising a total of 5 islands and 3 islets. It is the largest of the Bijagós islands, largely covered by exuberant vegetation. Only 10% of its territory is populated by around 2,500 inhabitants who live in a matrilineal society. The fauna is particularly rich and abundant, with large colonies of marine hippos, manatees, otters, dolphins and green monkeys, among other species. The park's only hotel organizes private shuttle transfers between Orango and Quinhamel.
