Also known as Roxa Island, Canhabaque rivals Caravela as the most beautiful island. It's a little paradise, long and wild, with a coastline alternating between magnificent beaches and fish-filled rocks. The first island in the archipelago to be inhabited, it is divided into several tabancas (villages) that have preserved their matrilineal customs. Here, it is the woman who owns the house and chooses her children's names. Although these villages are ruled by a king (oronho), he is chosen by a council of women, presided over by a priestess (okinka), elected for life.
