Covering 49,500 hectares in the southwest of the Bijagós archipelago, this national park comprises four islands (Meio, João Vieira, Poilão and Cavalos) and a few islets. Covered by sub-humid forests and palm groves, they are only inhabited at certain times of the year, and are considered sacred. Every year during the rainy season, the park's deserted beaches play host to green, hawksbill and olive ridley turtles, who come to lay their eggs. With over 30,000 nests a year, Poilão Island is considered the most important nesting site on the eastern Atlantic coast.
