With a population of around 1,500, Ilha das Galinhas, which means "Island of Chickens", is located between the islands of Bolama and Rubane. In the days of Portuguese colonialism, it was used as a prison for political prisoners and independence fighters, such as José Carlos Schwartz, one of Guinea-Bissau's greatest musical icons. Today, the ruins of this prison and the former governor's house can still be seen. There are no hotels on the island, but you can enjoy a few hours on the magnificent, unspoilt beaches. In Bubaque or Rubane, some hoteliers can arrange a return trip by private boat.
