Stretching over some twenty kilometers in the middle of the Bijagós archipelago, Bubaque is located 53 km southwest of Bissau. It's the capital of the islands. This doesn't mean you'll find a series of hotels along a concrete beach drowned in tourists - quite the contrary. The campsites are a judicious blend of traditional African architecture and international comfort for the more expensive among them. No house on the island is more than one storey high, and tourism remains confidential. The population is totally indifferent to foreigners, and the area is known only to the curious or fanatical fishermen. The wild beauty of the island is matched only by the blue water in which it is reflected. Separated from Rubane by a narrow channel, its shores offer splendid views of its neighbor. Its fine sandy beaches also invite you to relax and swim in crystal-clear water, although you'll have to be careful of the currents. Bubaque will undoubtedly be the highlight of your stay in Guinea-Bissau, especially if you're an avid fisherman. It's also the gateway to the other islands for adventurers with a little more time on their hands. In fact, several camps have fast shuttles for sport fishing and inter-island travel. Find out more on site. Bubaque is famous for its music festival, which takes place over the Easter weekend. Locals, expatriates and tourists come in droves to listen to traditional music.
