The inhabitants of this region are those of a powerful kingdom founded by Tiramakhan Traoré, a general of the Mali Empire. The Mandingo kingdom of Gabú was overthrown by Fulani invasions in the 19th century. Now a crossroads, Gabú is one of West Africa's main trading centers, with a majority of its inhabitants being Fulani. A colorful market, the second largest in the country, runs alongside the road. You can find everything here! The Muslim religion is very present in this region, and this is reflected in different dress habits, with long, loose clothes, a specific musical custom and small mosques.
