Founded after the occupation of Fouta by the marabout Karamoko Alpha, the city was the capital of the province (or diwal) of the same name.) It was then one of the nine provinces of theocratic Fouta. Important because of its size, it also proved to be an important center of national and sub-regional trade, open directly to the markets of neighboring countries: Senegal, Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Mali and beyond. Labé, the regional capital, has all the assets of a major Fouta capital. The prefecture has a population of just over 350,000. It hosts a branch of the University of Conakry and is an important commercial crossroads. Its famous market, Kouroula, is the second largest in the country, after Madina in the capital. Note that from March and for a few weeks, the city is like set ablaze by thousands of red flames lit on the branches of flamboyant. This magnificent spectacle is further enhanced by the violet touches of the jacaranda flowers. Coming from Senegal or Guinea-Bissau, Labé is also the first city with accommodation facilities to welcome tourists who come to discover the mountains and wonders of the region. It is a pity that the road to Senegal is not completely finished. In April 2022, there are still about thirty kilometers of bad track between Labé and Kounsitel. This would greatly facilitate trade and the arrival of visitors from Dakar, Bissau and Banjul.
