Fria was born with the bauxite mines. The alumina factory and the buildings of the city can be seen about ten kilometers before reaching the city. Built in the 1950s, these three ten-story bars, which are strangely reminiscent of the low-cost housing estates in the French suburbs, are an original feature of this city. After a difficult period marked by the 2012 strike and the complete shutdown of alumina production, the partial resumption of activities at the Rusal plant in 2018 has given the city some hope and dynamism. Fria remains a city apart. Formerly called "little Paris", there is a spirit of brotherhood and openness here, but also a very strong sense of pride in being Fria. The tourist potential of Fria is real. Beyond the historical interest of the city, it is essentially found in the natural sites located a few kilometers from the center, notably towards Tormelin
