Perched on a hill, with the impressive remains of its fortress, Przemyśl is undeniably a charming stop in southwest Poland. Przemyśl is the second oldest town in all of southern Poland and has more than a thousand years, a thousand years of military history as an important border fortress. A passageway between East and West, since its origin Przemyśl has always been at the center of invasions, world conflicts and international tensions. Only in the 16th and 17th centuries did the city experience a time of economic prosperity and was able to build the architectural heritage that we can admire today, although most of it was destroyed during the partition of Poland in the 18th century. In the 19th century, the city underwent gigantic transformations, when the Austrians, then masters of the land, decided to undertake pharaonic fortification work aimed at making Przemyśl "the gateway to Hungary." This work, which began in 1855, lasted until the eve of the First World War. This construction site, together with the construction of the railroad connecting Galicia to Hungary, offered the city a great economic development and an increase in population. During the Second World War, when such fortresses became unnecessary, Przemyśl was largely destroyed. The center was partially rebuilt identically after the war.
