Nowy Targ (literally "new market"), 20 km north of Zakopane, is larger but less attractive than its neighbor. The capital of the Podhale region is, however, a good base for hiking in the Gorace (to the northeast) or Spisz (to the southeast) massifs. Destroyed by fire in 1784, its current location on the Dunajec is far from unpleasant, even if it's true that the town has no major attractions apart from its market. Lovers of nature and tranquillity will find here the ideal refuge from mass tourism. It's impossible to deny that Zakopane has lost some of its authenticity in this respect.
