The Gothic town of Sandomierz is one of the most typical places in the whole country, hardly altered by the slow passage of the centuries. The town was once an important river port and crossroads on the roads to the East, known for its tradition of great religious tolerance: in 1367, the local Jews were one of the first protected communities in the country, and later, in 1570, the Sandomierz agreements established mutual respect between Lutherans, Calvinists and Moravian Brethren. Its magnificent Ratusz, sloping Rynek and astonishing underground system beneath the old town make it a highly recommended stopover. It's easy to rent a room in a local home. Look for the Noclegi or Pokoje signs posted at the entrances to the houses, or contact the tourist office.
