The fifth most visited pilgrimage site in the world (after Varanasi, Mecca, Lourdes and Rome), Częstochowa has held a special place in Poland ever since the famous Black Madonna was proclaimed Queen of Poland in 1717. The Communists set out to divert the city from its religious role, and set up numerous industries. The modern town has no particular attractions. But, perched on its hilltop, the magnificent Jasna Góra monastery is not only a major architectural attraction, but, constantly crowded with pilgrims, a veritable plunge into Polish Catholicism. A visit will be an experience of Polish devotion, of the incredible link between Poland and religion. Thanks to the millions of pilgrims who visit every year, the tourist infrastructure is both numerous and of a high standard.
