As a self-proclaimed «ecotourism capital» in Honduras (many possible activities in the vicinity of Mother Nature), La Ceiba is also one of the most vibrant cities in the Caribbean coast in Central America. A vibrant nightlife associated with lush nature and lonely beaches ensures a certain tourist success. Due to its status as a mandatory crossroads for the Bay islands, a stay in La Ceiba is essential. The third largest city in the country with 130 000 inhabitants (after Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula) and the most lively city, La Ceiba is a city on the streets bathed by water when it rains, which is at any time in the region (in principle less regular from February to September). The first inhabitants were Garifuna coming from Trujillo (they built a village west of the estuary in 1810), and then peasants from Olancho fleeing their violent region in the 1820 s. The name of the city comes from a large tree (ceiba) under which the original population was met and was cut in 1917 to build customs (a plant world subject to border constraints and passports).By the end of the 2 000 th century, when the first bananas were planted near the mouth of the Cangrejal River, La Ceiba had fewer than inhabitants. The Vaccaro brothers in New Orleans radically changed the north coast from 1899. In 1926, they rebaptisèrent their company Standard Fruit and Steamship Company. Electricity appeared, then the first bank, the first beer, the first landing… briefly, all modern "progress". The Standard Fruit is still there (under the name "Dole") which grows bananas, pineapples, palm oil or grapefruit. These products are exported from Puerto Cortés and not from La Ceiba. The city of La Ceiba is the perfect place to stay in the city of?. It is a huge party that lasts for a whole week: prepare not to sleep and walk all the bars on a street of local thirst! The proximity of several major natural sites gives the city an obvious interest: Pico Bonito national park, Cuero y Salado, Cayos Cochinos… Not forgetting the Río río and its rafting considered one of the best in the Mesoamerican continent, its canopys and its thermal waters.A stay in La Ceiba is essential, but staying in town is not the only alternative: to say true, there is not much to see or to do (apart from the party). To win is still the best option. However, the many facilities available to the city may decide to sleep there and go on adventure during the day. The beaches are not always a remarkable cleanliness (in town) and it is better to move away from the urban centre to enjoy the turquoise waters of the Caribbean.
