54 kilometres from the capital, Ilobasco is famous for its craftsmen who produce terracotta miniatures (sometimes only a few millimetres!) since the th century. Undoubtedly curiosity: sorpresas (surprises) are covered miniatures that reveal their nature only if they are discovered (often amour or nus scenes). Ilobasco's name comes from the Lenca Ou or Silobascoy, "the place of tortillas or dry ears". Indeed, maize plantations abound.
