The "Sultana of the Orient" is located in a large plain in the northeast of the Chaparrastique volcano. Earthquakes do not affect this region; indeed, a certain colonial heritage has been preserved there, now drowned in a vibrant commercial modernity. San Salvador is 136 km away.In the historic centre, the municipal palace dates back to 1928. The cathedral, of 1862, has beautiful stained glass windows. The Francisco Gavida Theatre was erected in 1909; he reproduces in miniature the opera of Paris. The carnival at the end of November is very well known. Concerts of national and international music, parades, and little atmosphere.
