Its name comes from coatl (snake) and nayarit (mount): the "serpent mountain" is one of the most beautiful lakes in El Salvador. Located at 740 m altitude, he formed 25 000 years ago and is of volcanic origin. It covers about 25 km ² (the crater measuring 70 km ²), sometimes reaching a depth of 115 m. Volcanic cones collapsed following an eruption, forming a sort of champagne pebble. An underground river is probably connected to the Río Agua Caliente. An islet rises on a small bay, Cerro Grande (also called Teopán, "in the place of God" or "on the sacred place"), which was once ceremonial site of the Maya, culminating in almost 100 m of altitude and where the worship of the goddess Ixqueye was celebrated. There are still petroglyphs there.A road lined with flowers makes it possible to approach the lake from San Salvador or Santa Ana. It then gains a wonderful natural gazebo where many of the fortune restaurants hanging over the lake offer a truly breathtaking view. The road continues to the edge of the lake, bordered by many special houses. The majority of restaurants open this weekend. Try the sopa of cangrejo, "crab soup" in Spanish.
