San Salvador has a little more than 300 000 inhabitants and nearly 2 million in its agglomeration. At an altitude of 658 metres, San Salvador, located at the foot of the San Salvador volcano in the valley of hammocks, is the centre of the social, economic, cultural and of course political life of the country. Although the capital was several times devastated by earthquakes, San Salvador lived under a pleasant spring climate, all year round. San Salvador is certainly the most pleasant capital of Central America. The number of people living in the capital has fallen significantly over the last ten years to peripheral cities such as Santa Tecla.
