A fresh and lively city (north shopping centre) at about 800 m above sea level, which gradually forms part of the travellers'agenda for the beauty of its surrounding mountains, the Sandinista heritage and the warm welcome of its inhabitants.Estelí was one of the homes of the Sandinista movement during the Somoza family dictatorship, whose wrath she had to endure, and became the theatre of the civil war of the Contras during the 1980 s. As much as this political and social legacy has left behind, and aboriginal conversations can be interesting.Another blow of the spell that forges a trempé character (without bad pun), Hurricane Mitch seriously damaged the city in 1998.The region is famous in the country for its tobacco production: there are some of the best cigars in the world. Livestock are also widespread. The equestrian activities of December are popular.Tourism is now expanding: the border close to Honduras makes it a compulsory route on the road to Managua and the south.
