Kautokeino is located 130 km south of Karasjok, and is Norway's largest municipality in terms of surface area, at 9,687 km². On the Finnmarksvidda plateau, just 3,000 inhabitants live alongside 100,000 reindeer! The survival of the town, which is a center of Lapp culture, depends on reindeer herding. If you want to immerse yourself in Lapp culture, this is the place to stay. The immensity of the plateau is breathtaking. The Snelandia company runs between Kautokeino and Alta. In summer, Lapin Linjat Bus connects Kautokeino with Alta and Rovaniemi, Finland, once a day. From Karasjok, only 4 departures a week.
