The little port near Murmansk, often shrouded in fog, is home to a few old rafts from another era, flying the Russian flag. The hulls are rusty, the gangways twisted. The town may seem like a short stopover on the way to more pleasant fjords, the end of a journey from Oslo or the start of one to Bergen..., but it deserves much more than a brief visit. The surrounding area encapsulates everything the Far North has to offer. Three borders meet 70 km south of Kirkenes: Russian, Finnish and Norwegian. But also three types of vegetation: taiga, Siberian steppe and Arctic flora, a type of nature capable of withstanding temperature variations ranging from -52°C to +32°C! It's possible to spot brown bears, reindeer in the wild and, if you hire a canoe on the Pasvik River, to be accompanied by curious seals... It's very difficult to understand this town, its atmosphere, its nature and its people, when arriving from a big city. On the other hand, it's the perfect end to a long journey north: here, you need time to contemplate!
