Store (large) Ringheim was the largest of the Ringheim farms, it is now divided into three full-size farms of Western Norway and a number of smaller ones. The other Ringheim farms are Nedre (lower) Ringheim, Indre (inner) Ringheim and Vetle (small) Ringheim.

The name is very old and of unknown origin, as the farms are not arranged in a circle (ring), nor is there any known connection with the old masculine name Hringr (Ring). The possibility of the use of Ring in a context of poverty is unlikely since the farming conditions are very good on these farms.

The area was probably one of the first to be used for agriculture in Voss more than two millennia ago, with piles of graves dating to pre-Viking times.

The first written documentation of the farm is a dispute from 1300 where Hollrod de Store Ringheim is one of the parties.

After the Black Death, the farm became part of the church properties, owned by priests and priest's widows and managed by tenants. In 1740, a small part of the farm was divided and is now farm number 2. The remaining farm number 1 was sold to my ancestor, Johannes Olsen Hole in 1778 by the vicar Jens Bergendahl. Johannes then took the name Ringheim as was the custom at the time.

Johannes was a colorful man who had probably traveled all over the world, in the deed he was called Danne Mand (Danish man) an expression to designate a Danish citizen although he was born and raised in Voss. He had the privilege of producing spirits and had up to 16 barrels of spirits in stock in the old Loft (wooden warehouse) according to local history books. The loft still stands in the middle of the yard.

After the traditional farming ended, we had to think about how to use the buildings and land. Finally, the idea of working with humans came up. It was a long process of planning and especially applications, before the transformation of the courtyard could begin.

After years of restoration and construction, we were able to open what we then called a guest courtyard with a restaurant, function room, pub and gallery in July 2011.

Summer 2013 was the next step when we opened our small boutique hotel in "Gardshuset", the old farmhouse, with 6 historic rooms.

In February 2017 we significantly increased the room capacity when we had converted the old shed, "Reiskapshuset", into 9 modern hotel rooms.

In April 2019, we reopened our restaurant "Flor'n" with a new concept, a new interior and a return to our roots. Local and unrefined food, menus that reflect the season and access to raw materials - in short, sustainable and tasty food is what we offer our guests.
