In Ulefoss are some of the locks of the old Telemark Canal, a kind of Canal du Midi that has linked the plains to the mountains for more than a century. The 105 km long Telemark Canal, with its 18 locks, lifts boats 72 m above sea level. Built in 1892, this canal, which runs from Skien to Dalen, is now back in service with 2 boats, the Victoria, built in 1882, and the Henrik Ibsen, built in Sweden in 1907. During the restoration of the canal, the locks were kept as they were originally and operated by hand. The most spectacular ones are a little further on, at Vrangfoss.
