Travel Guide Matmata

Magnificent oasis located at about twenty kilometers from Nbeika, Matmata is known for its crocodiles. Thousands of years ago, it was connected by rivers to a large hydrographic network. As the climate has warmed, only the deepest parts of these rivers remain today, where the reptiles have become trapped. Matmata is a natural cistern dug in the rock. Most of the waters of Tagant arrive here tumbling in cascades, during the winter, from the surrounding cliffs; except in the west, where a gorge allows access to this guelta, scientific name given to a natural basin surrounded by rocks.
