Tichit, like all the ancient cities of Mauritania, lost its prosperity with the decline of trans-Saharan trade. In addition, droughts have hit it hard, its water table has dried up, causing the near disappearance of its palm grove. Rains as violent as rare destroyed a good part of the old houses, that is why a great number of its inhabitants left the city, in search of more hospitable lands. Today, Tichit survives thanks to theamersâl, a mixture of earth and salt that women extract from the surrounding depressions before sending it, by camel, to the south of the country.
