Vao is the main town and the only real village of the Isle of Pines. It is located in the south of the island and can be reached by a road that runs along the ocean and offers superb views of the islet of Brosse, where the main essential services are located, as well as a pretty Catholic mission and a beautiful church, Notre-Dame de l'Assomption. It is also here that the communal market takes place twice a week and that one finds the only snack bar of the island. The village is picturesque and blends in with the exuberant vegetation. But the greatest attraction of the village is undoubtedly the two nearby bays: that of Saint-Maurice, where the very photogenic memorial of the missionaries with its carved totems on a turquoise water background is located, and that of Saint-Joseph from where the pirogues leave for Upi Bay.
