Chief town and the only real village on the Isle of Pines, located in the south of the island, which can be reached by a road that runs along the ocean and offers superb views of Brosse Islet, Vao has all the main essential services (dispensary, bank, point I) as well as a beautiful Catholic mission and a beautiful church, Notre-Dame de l'Assomption. It is also here that the municipal market takes place twice a week and that you can find the only snack bar on the island. The village is picturesque and blends into the exuberant vegetation. But perhaps the greatest attraction of the village lies in the two nearby bays: that of Saint-Maurice, where the very photogenic missionary memorial with its totem poles sculpted on a turquoise water background, and that of Saint-Joseph where the pirogues leave for the bay of Upi.
