Thio (in xârâcùù or Xâragùrè : Tchô or Cöö), is a small condensed version of Caledonia on its own. Thio village and Thio mission gather a thousand inhabitants, the 13 tribes about 1,600. There are superb black or white sandy beaches, powerful mountains rising to the sky, deep and untamed forests, a vibrant Melanesian culture with 15 tribes and the oldest nickel mine in the country. The whole is spread over 1,000 km², with just over two inhabitants per km².... The natural setting is very diverse, thanks in particular to the bird reserves of Kouaré and Ouindoà, as well as the Mount Humboldt reserve (access via the La Tontouta valley on the west coast). The islets Némou and Moindé-Ouémié are classified as marine reserves and the Forgotten Coast is dizzying because of its vastness outside time and space. Coming here is already an adventure in itself, the town being accessible only by the scheduled road or via the beautiful transversal road of Boulouparis.
