Both an integral part of the Nouméa agglomeration and the Grand Sud, Le Mont-Dore, with a population of 27,155, is a plural and naturally very diverse commune. Its population places it third on the Caillou, just behind Dumbéa. With a gigantic perimeter, it includes the districts of Pont-des-Français, La Conception, Saint-Michel, Robinson, Boulari, La Coulée, Vallon-Dore and Plum and the tribe of Saint Louis (to be avoided at night for security reasons). The tourist and mining sites of Prony, Goro and Port-Boisé are even administratively part of it, so much so that the whole region is actually divided between its territory and that of Yaté. The Goro factory (which cannot be visited) is located in the middle of nature and looks like a comic strip from Tintin or Blake and Mortimer. As soon as you leave the inhabited areas, it is impossible not to fall under the spell of this red earth, the green vegetation and the blue of the Pacific. An ascent of Mont-Dore is essential to grasp all the diversity of the South, on the border between lagoon, mountains, wild life and urban life.
