Built in Paris in 1862 for the London Universal Exhibition, the Amédée lighthouse was transferred piece by piece to the archipelago. It dominates the horizon from the top of its 56 meters and is located about twenty kilometers from Nouméa (count 45 minutes by boat with the Mary D company). Since it began operations in 1865, it has indicated the proximity of the Boulari pass, one of the three passes between the lagoon and the ocean. The panorama at the top is magnificent in good weather, but you will first have to climb the 247 steps. Within the reef, the depth of the lagoon drops to an average of 25 m. Once the barrier is passed, the drop-off makes you dizzy. On weekends, the crowd flocks to the island, which is classified as a nature reserve (fishing and collection of forbidden flowers). There are 63 different plant species, of which about 30 have been introduced. Beautiful bananas stand next to coconut trees, bouraos and filaos. Watch your step, there are many striped knits.
