Sittwe was born from the ashes of Mrauk-U in 1785. It was indeed the British colonists who chose to make this port city the new Rakhine capital, after annexing the Arakan at the end of the first Anglo-Burmese war. If the English decided the fate of Sittwe, they did not leave a very marked imprint on its walls. Stretching on both sides of its main street, this village without much interest has no trace of colonial charm. The local population gravitates around the port. The commercial transit via the Rakhine coasts is, still today, very important. For many travellers, Sittwe is only an obligatory stopover to reach Mrauk-U. However, it is in itself a human-sized city, pleasant to visit, and a stroll in its market at the time when fishermen bring back the fish is an unforgettable moment.
