Welcome to Mrauk-U, one of the country's ancient capitals, now a tourist site in the making. It was not until the 15th century that the city of Mrauk-U appeared on the list of Burma's capitals. In 1404, the Arakan had fallen under the rule of the Ava kings, who, after invading the region, hoped to extend their sovereignty over the whole western part of the country. The then Rakhine king, Minsawmun, was forced to take refuge in Bengal, which was then under Muslim control. In order to limit the isolation of the capital, located in the Arakanian lands and not on the coast, the king encouraged the construction of canals, which were to facilitate the transit of ships to the very gates of the city. For a long time isolated from the rest of the country, Mrauk-U is now accessible by road, long and winding, or by ferry from Sittwe, a magnificent journey. No more excuses not to visit it!
