In 442 B.C., an earthquake struck central Burma. A peak of lava appeared in the middle of the Myigyan plains: Mount Popa. The volcanic ash that covered the slopes of the peak gradually fertilized the soil, and flowers of all colours appeared. Hence the name Popa, meaning "flower" in Sanskrit. Located at an altitude of 1,518 meters, Mount Popa is 50 km from Bagan. It can be reached by an arid red dirt road lined with rows of sparse palm trees. The inhabitants of the region consider this sugar loaf to be the residence of the gods, Burma's Mount Olympus. The alchemists settled on the slopes. Today, there are many shops there. They sell medicinal herbs, orchids or sandalwood water for offerings. From the summit, often crowded with pilgrims, the view is magnificent. Beware of the monkeys that populate the slopes, terrible thieves
