Once separate, the communes of Barneville and Carteret merged in 1965 to develop the highly sought-after site of today, while preserving the wild charm of the coastline. Today, Barneville-Carteret is a European Blue Flag seaside resort, a peaceful town in the off-season, with two different faces: the rural town of Barneville, and the seaside port of Carteret. In summer, the population increases tenfold. Over the last twenty years or so, Carteret has gradually become more and more posh, with house prices soaring, real-estate developments - albeit controlled - flourishing and infrastructures expanding.
