Ndola is the administrative capital of the region and the third largest city in Zambia after Lusaka and Kitwe, with a population of nearly 500,000. It is located 320 km north of the capital and only 10 km from the DRC border. It is an important trading center with a large number of industries, including a copper refinery and a printing plant. The refinery primarily processed copper from the historic Bwana Mkubwa open pit mine, located 10 km from the city, until it closed in 2010 after the ground was exhausted, but now processes ore from other nearby mines that are still open. The Printpak printing plant operates by printing the Times of Zambia, one of the country's leading newspapers produced here. Ndola has a huge, ultra-modern stadium, the 50,000-seat Levy Mwanawasa, which is part of Zambia's bid to host the 2025 African Cup of Nations.
